President Martin Van Buren (c. 1852)

Martin Van Buren (1782 – 1862), the eighth President of the United States, was the first president to be born and raised in USA. Van Buren was a leader who held conflicting views. Despite the fact that he elevated American politics to previously unimaginable heights, his judgment was frequently viewed as contentious. Despite the fact that there are higher-quality photos of the man available, we chose this one for its intriguing story. Van Buren fought his way through a fierce storm to his meeting with Brady. When Brady questioned Van Buren about his commitment to their appointment, Van Buren said that he would always do his best to see that an agreement was carried out with all his might.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1857)

Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806 – 1859), once a contender for the title of “greatest Briton of all time,” dominated engineering in the 1800s with his attempts to transform Great Britain. Brunel is credited with the building of many railway lines, innumerable bridges, including suspension bridges, a military field hospital, and three ships, according to the London-based Design Museum. Brunel stands among the enormous anchors of the Great Eastern, a stately steamship of his design, in this 1857 photograph by Robert Howlett. The ship surpassed all previous vessels that sailed during his lifetime, being six times the size of anything that floated.
